EP, unilateral declaration

For the first time, the European Parliament publishes a unilateral
declaration with the conclusions of the inter-parliamentary meeting
EU-Albania.

Although behind closed door, the European left and right centered political groups were unable to make Albanian Socialists and Democrats to find a consensus, for the third time.

But the unilateral declaration of the European Parliament is about a neutral stance on the electoral dispute between both parties.

“The meeting went fine, was held in a civilized climate, but didn’t come up with anything new. The Albanian politicians must put Albania and the suffering people before their interests”, said European Deputy Eduard Kukan.

“For the first time, the European Deputies approved a crystal clear declaration, that political parties in Albania must resolve this situation through dialogue”, underlined Victor Bostinaru.

Minister of Integration Majlinda Bregu and Socialist Deputy Valentina Leskaj gave an interview after the meeting.

“The meeting was behind closed doors, but I cannot leave without mentioning the fact that beside being a routine mission, this meeting had a great attention on local elections. This is for the fact that the elections are part of several previous talks”, Majlinda Bregu declared.

SP deputy Valentina Leskaj said:
“I must respect the confidentiality of this meeting, but the most important message was that of Mr. Fule, which was stronger. I want to quote on of EU deputies saying: ‘Mr. Fule’s declaration was stronger.’ This means that the Commissioner was less diplomatic this time”.

In the final unilateral declaration, the European Parliament Members expressed their concern about the political crisis that continued after June 2009, which has damaged the international image of the country and its European perspective.

“Both parties are unable to find a consensus for the sake of their country and citizens”, says the unilateral declaration, admitting that the EU Parliament, the EU Commission, the EU Foreign Service and EU Council failed with their mission for helping the Albanian parties to find a consensus.
