Berisha: Rama has the President on his side

The Albanian Prime Minister doesn’t spare his comments when he speaks about
the Albanian President Bamir Topi, and he believes that the
Constitutional reforms expected to be presented by the Socialist Party,
will be made on direct behalf of the President Topi.

The opposition has not clearly articulated how it will include in the constitutional reforms the way the President will be elected.

However, Prime Minister Berisha has been clearer than crystal in his consideration about President Topi, elected four years ago with the votes of his own Democratic Party.

But the enthusiasm has run off, and Bamir Topi is considered by the Democratic Party as the President that voted for Edi Rama and therefore he belongs to the opposition.

The Prime Minister expressed this consideration when asked if the cooperation with the opposition would include the election of a consensual President in the next July.

“My offer is the implementation of the Constitution. Mr. Rama had the President on his side. The President voted for him, and this was proved. I want to emphasize that there are many people who ask me if I feel betrayed by his action. Not at all, because you must be sure that the main goal of my entire life was been to allow people to vote freely. This is an ideal that cannot be obscured by any other close interest. Mr. Rama had the President by his side with his heart, because he who gives you the vote with, signs for you with his own political will. Can you tell me who must prevail: the flirts, the betrayals, or the Constitution? The Constitution, without any doubt”, Berisha declared.

The Constitution, after being amended three years ago by Sali Berisha and Edi Rama, provides that there must be a qualified majority of 84 votes for the first three rounds of the Presidential election, and only afterwards the election could be approved with 71 votes. Apparently, the Democrats will not be ready to change this formula.

“I declared that the Albanian President must by elected in full accordance with the Constitution. And this is not in my interest, or in the interest of the government. This is in the interest of the constitutional order and the citizens. Requiring constitutional changes because you want to take the President by your side? Tell me, is this rational? Things must be based on reason. What did the President give him? 140,000 votes less, even with his vote for him”, Berisha declared.
