A few hours after Ismail Kadare’s letter was made public, Democratic Party candidate
for Mayor of Tirana gave an answer.

His reply to the famous Albanian writer, who suggested him to withdraw for the country’s sake, was that he has no intention to withdraw and that he will listen Tirana citizens’ voice until the end, following all legal ways by fully respecting the law.

“My campaign’s philosophy was based on hearing and dialoguing with the citizens. Therefore it is impossible for me to ignore the voice of more than 124 thousand citizens, who answered positively to my project and plan for making a radical change of the Albanian capital , which is experiencing an urban, environmental and existential collapse. It is not me who decides if I will be Tirana’s next Mayor, but the citizens. I have no right, in any circumstance, to abandon their choice”, Basha declared.

Basha declared that only democracy and fair elections are the basis of Albania’s European future. He even considered Ismail Kadare’s proposal as bargaining for democracy, expressing that unfair victories on tables, for him or his opponent, would damage democracy. This is the reason that Lulzim Basha declared that it is better a race until the last vote, than without a race at all.
