While the Albanian media is continuing to publish the content of the US
Embassy cables on Wikileaks, the US Ambassador Alexander Arvizu started
this week by holding a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs,
Edmond Haxhinasto.

The Foreign Ministry has officially announced that the purpose of this meeting was the EU integration. While ambassador Arvizu refused to comment on the cables of Wikileaks, considering them as harmful.

“We do not comment anything that has to do with Wikileaks. Anything that involves publishing of unauthorized materials is harmful and we do not comment about it”, Arvizu declared.

The meeting was behind closed doors, and afterwards, the US Ambassador and the Minister Haxhinasto gave a press release and emphasized the importance of the EU integration efforts,

“We discussed about mutual issues that are expected to be discussed in the UN assembly; the political situation in the country and the need of a national pact that must have as main objective the fulfillment of the 12 priorities. This means that all political parties will engage in an unconditioned process for respecting and implementing the priorities set by the EU Union in front of Albania and the Albanians, and also the last recommendations in the OSCE-ODIHR report, for the latest elections”,. Haxhinasto declared.

Arvizu said that with Haxhinasto they discussed about Albania’s EU integration.

“The United States of America gives full support for these efforts. We note a wide national consensus for this matter. I would like to add that there are some specific modalities among the EU member countries and Albania, which is a sovereign country, therefore this is a matter between two counterparts. For the integration to be successful, national efforts are needed, including a consensus and national will. This means that the efforts shouldn’t come only from the government or one single party. Unification is needed for this goal, and I am convinced that this can be achieved, with the necessary motivation”, Arvizu declared.
