Working under garbage to afford textbooks, the sad story of a murdered teenager

The street that leads to Geg Gjoklaj’s house is filled with people who have come to comfort him and express their condolences for the loss of his son, Ardit.

The 17-year old had just finished the second year at a public High School in Kombinat, and during the summer helped his parents after had decided to by his and his sister’s textbooks with the money he would earn at the landfill. His 19-yer old brother, Ardian, had previously done the same job, working and the urban waste selection.

“We did it to help our family. He called me and told me to go with him. I said to him I was in the village because our grandma was sick and to go by himself there”, Ardian tells us. The night he died hit by a heavy machine, was supposed to be his last there. “Tomorrow I will get paid and I will not go there anymore, he said. It was exhausting and he was upset”, Serxhio Xhameta, a friend of his, recalls. “The incident gets more grave because they tried to cover the body with waste”, Lush Gjoklja, Ardit’s uncle said.

The family moved from Lekbibaj to Kombinat some 20 years ago in search for e better future, bu even though Geg Gjoklaj worked some years as a police officers he did not managed to raise his three kids by himself so Ardit gave him a hand. Seeing his father disappointment Ardit had excluded the possibility to become a police officer himself. He dreamt of becoming a plumber and was following a professional school in the neighborhood. Sadly his dreams and his life were interrupted…
