The wildfires on the island of Sazan near Vlorea and those in Mirdita in northeastern Albania, were put out today after interventions from the ground and the air.

22 units of the Armed Forces, 9 vehicles and two ships were engaged in the operation launched three days ago to extinguish the flames.

The intervention from the air started this morning when an extinguisher aircraft came from neighburing Greece as support.

The situation in Sazan Island is under control as work continues to avoid the possibility of flares re-igniting due to the dense vegetation.

54 members of the army joined the fire brigade in the action to extinguish the wildfire in Mirdita in the north of the country. The operation made it possible to avoid the spread of flames near the inhabited areas.

For four days a great smoke cloud has been rising over the largest island of Albania, Sazani, while dozens of centuries-old pines have were burned in it. An obvious danger on the island were also the remaining old ammunition which could explode from the heat.
