WB conditions for help

The World Bank set conditions before increasing the financial support
for Albania, by reaching an agreement with the government on the
administration of public finances.

“We are discussing with the government to give financial support, and we also need to reach a general agreement on the macroeconomic sector of the country. There are negotiations that are being held. I believe that we are close to a solution, and when this will happen, we will be able to progress with the program that will support Albania”, declared Ellen Goldstein, Director of the World Bank for Western Balkan.

The chief of the WB office in Tirana declared that very soon this institution would bring a detailed package of recommendations for the measures that should be taken in order to keep the debt under control.

“We are making a general analysis of public finances. It will be a detailed analysis to understand the causes of imbalances, which are the options to intervene and the fiscal impact of each of them. These recommendations will be in one draft that will be sent to the new government after the elections, but the most emergent thing is paying the outstanding debts”, declared Ksenyia Lvovski.

On the verge of the general elections, World Bank leaders also gave a message for the new government that will come out the elections of June 23rd.

“Whatever government will come to power after June 2013, they will find themselves with the main goal to improve the public finances and the efficiency of the tax administration, and increase the fiscal regime predictability. We don’t think that there is room for lowering taxes and this goes not only for Albania, but the entire region”, Lvovski declared.

The World Bank considers the high public debt as one of the biggest dangers of the Albanian economy, and asked the government to lower it.
