The US Embassy to Tirana reacted about the voting process and appealed all political leaders, party officials, security agencies and citizens to make sure that the June 30th elections will be calm and transparent.
The U.S. Embassy calls on all political leaders, government officials, security personnel, and citizens of Albania to ensure that the elections on June 30 are conducted in an orderly and transparent manner. We urge political leaders to reject any and all forms of violence, or any attempts to disrupt the electoral process or otherwise interfere with another citizen’s right to vote. Violence is not a legitimate form of political expression. Those who choose to engage in violence should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
The United States will have teams of election observers monitoring polling stations and counting centres across Albania. We will look to the OSCE/ODIHR for its report evaluating the conduct of the vote.
We urge political leaders following Sunday’s election to return their focus to strengthening Albania’s democratic institutions and the rule of law, including by moving forward with the establishment of a Constitutional Court headed by vetted judges. Adopting electoral reforms and implementing justice reform are key to Albania’s EU aspirations and creating a strong democracy that serves all Albanians.
