USA-EU demand “Vetting” law. Meta interrupts visit on fears of broken consensus

The Albanian politics is working with urgency to pass the draft law of
“Vetting”, one of the seven laws that are part of the Justice Reform
package. International partners are one again the ones thinking that
Albanian lawmakers should not start their summer holidays without
passing the most important law of the reform, the “vetting” of judges
and prosecutors.

The draft was sent to the members of the Special Commission for the Justice Reform, so that it can pass in Parliament as soon as possible.

The Chairman of this commission, Fatmir Xhafaj, said that a copy was sent to every member, and no one should say they had no time to study it.

The opposition has requested more time to review the draft, giving this way signs of a new political conflict, even after the reform passed in the marathon session of July 21st and 22nd.

This opinion was reinforced by a declaration of the SMI, which said that their leader, Ilir Meta, interrupted his visit in the USA to return urgently to Tirana, and clarify the confusion created recently and that aims to break the consensus reached on July 21st.

Xhafaj didn’t react on the declarations of the SMI but said they are part of the consensus. He added that there is constant pressure from the EU and USA to pass the “Vetting” law, which is the most important among the seven laws of this package.
