USA against Parliamentary boycott in Albania

The US Ambassador broke his long silence about the current political situation in Albania.

Last he was heard when he accused the Prosecutor General of violating the Constitution with the implementation of the judiciary reform. In a meeting with Albanian journalists, the US Amabssador spoke for the first time for the opposition’s protest and declared Washington’s stance.

“We share the concerns of the opposition, as many other Albanians. The elections, decriminalization and the concerning cannabis situation. What we do not agree with, is the method used to push this agenda. The USA are against Parliamentary boycott, against threats to boycott the elections, the electoral reform and the judiciary reform”.

The US Ambassador excluded the possibility of an international intermediation and negotiations, especially from the USA. He said this should be resolved between the Albanian parties, calmly and without harsh rhetoric.

He said that the US are especially concerned that this situation might block the judiciary reform, especially now that the international mission is taking the “black list” of officials to Parliament. This would need special parliamentary commissions, made equally by the majority and opposition.

The Ambassador spoke about his meeting with Ilir Meta, saying it was very positive. “I value the role of Ilir Meta in this situation. He must do everything possible to find a solution.

The US Ambassador also had an advice: “I have an advice for the people who are protesting. I hope you embrace the reforms”, he said, insinuating that the opposition should return to Parliament and vote the Vetting commissions.
