The American Embassy in Albania has today called on all political parties to engage in constructive dialogue, after the burning of chairs by DP opposition MPs and physical clashes with those of the SP majority.
“The US Embassy is deeply concerned about the destruction and force unleashed on the Albanian parliament on Monday. Such damaging and potentially hurtful acts have no place in the democratic process.”
“We encourage all parties to exercise restraint, engage in constructive dialogue and embrace the values of respect and citizenship. We support the peaceful and cooperative discussions related to the negotiations for Albania’s ascension to EU, and we will continue to stand by the Albanian institutions, to bring Albania closer to the Euro-Atlantic community”, the Embassy wrote.
The parliamentary session earlier was engulfed by tensions between the majority and the opposition. The democratic deputies took their chairs from the hall out to the yard where they set them on fire.
The action comes after DP MP Ervin Salianji was sentenced to 1 year in prison on charges of false testimony.
The opposition has also decided to boycott all parliamentary committees, while on October 7 it says that the wave of protests will start.
