Serbia and Albania face harsh sanctions from UEFA, while the highest
European football institution is investigating the extraordinary scenes
that took place during the Serbia-Albania match.
The match in Belgrade was abandoned after the chaos that was created after a remotely controlled mini quad-copter entered the field with symbols Albanian symbols, causing tension among players and fans.
Judge Martin Atkinson ordered players to leave the field, but they were still attacked with solid objects. However, after the calm was restored, the Albanian players who had been physically attacked even by Serbian security guards refused to turn to the game. The only alternative they saw was suspending the match.
UEFA has started a disciplinary investigation for this case, while the President of UEFA, Michel Platini, criticized everything that happened.
“Football is supposed to unite people and it should not be used by politics. The scenes that we saw in Belgrade were unacceptable”, Platini declared.
The Head of FIFA, Sepp Blatter, said that they will start investigating both federations.
Serbia might be punished with at least one match behind closed doors, while Albania might face sanctions for being part of the scuffle.
Local media in Belgrade claim that the mini quad-copter that was carrying the flag was controlled from inside the stadium by the brother of the Albanian Prime Minister, Olsi Rama, who was at the VIP tribune. He was initially held by the police and then freed.
