Three days of national mourning were announced today in Northern Macedonia after 14 patients of the COVID hospital in Tetovo died the night before in a fire and explosion at around 21:02.

Over 30 firefighters with 7 engines fought with flames and made it possible to extinguish them in half an hour.

Firefighter Sasho Trajcevski stated that the fire was very large and that only victims were taken out of the hospital. The identities of the victims in the mainly ethnic Albanian city are still unknown.

The causes of the fire are still unknown, while five prosecutors are engaged in conducting expertise to uncover the causes of the event. The fire is thought to have been caused by the explosion of gas or oxygen cylinders.

“At 21:02 we received the notification that the hospital is burning in the medical center in Tetovo. Fire crews for 3-4 minutes arrived at the scene with 7 cars and over 30 firefighters. However when our teams arrived at the scene, everything was on fire. “We did our best and at 21:30 the fire was extinguished”, declared firefighter Sasho Trajcevski.
