Almost 3 years after the earthquake in November 2019 that destroyed and left thousands of families in Durrës without homes, some of them still have not returned to them.

While the reconstruction process is reported to continue, there are still families living in temporary containers in Manzë near Durres in central Albania.

“At the age of 74, a lonely elderly couple, can you imagine what it’s like to live in a container?! See how my head feels every time I get out of bed, as I hit the container’s wall. It is the third year and we do not know how long it take. We are waiting”, said the elderly person damaged by the earthquake.

Sadik Përleka is one of the residents damaged by the earthquake who had problems with the ownership of his house. He and 14 other families lived in the former Manza mine hotel, and now they don’t know what will happen with them.

“We feel humiliated. The buildings have finished constructing since spring. There are unoccupied apartments that belong to us, but they didn’t give us under the pretext that we don’t have the paperwork for the houses we had,” he said.

These residents have lost faith that one day will be settled in their homes, while the installation of electricity meters has made them even more distrustful.

“We cook with gas, but we have installed the air conditioner because without it I die from the heat. Very hard in the container. Small space. We are not against, but only for 10 families that have stayed here, they put the meters”, said the sheltered resident.

Their situation is still unresolved, while in the municipality of Durrës there are still thousands of residents who have not returned to their homes damaged by the earthquake.
