The “protected” lagoon turns into a swamp, ‘Gryka e Matkeqes’ is again filled with waste

Fiks Fare program has consistently denounced the blockage of the “Gryka e Matkeqes” protected area, the only point from which the “Kune Vain” lagoon, a reserve protected by the state, receives water from the sea.

Initially, the closing was done by individuals who owned property within the Lagoon, trying to acquire several thousand meters of land. After successive denunciations, in June of this year the authorities unblocked the passage by removing the inert waste.

But several months passed and again the canal connecting the lagoon to the sea was closed. Currently, the waters of the lagoon have started to become polluted, turning the entire area into a marsh and swamp. The only water that enters that reserve is that of the Tales Reservoir, but it is contaminated with sewage.

Fiks Fare journalists went again to the place called Gryka e Matkeqes, a natural channel that connects Kune Vaini Lagoon with the Adriatic Sea. The first complaint was in the summer of 2022, as the camera fixed dozens of trucks going in the middle of the day in a protected area to contaminate it. After the denunciation, employees of the Administration of Protected Areas were arrested, while several others were declared wanted.

But, despite these denunciations, different persons or firms tried to close the channel again in the spring of 2023. They again threw building waste in the middle of this passage, preventing sea water from penetrating into the Lagoon. “They are the same ones who closed it last time. Same group. No one looks at them,” claim the residents.

Once again Gryka e Matkeqe is closed. Sea water does not penetrate inland, endangering the flora and fauna of the entire Lagoon.

Journalists went to Tales reservoir, filming the canal waters, as the polluted waters are thrown inside the lagoon. In fact, they are the only waters that go to the Lagoon.

Fiks Fare journalists spoke with the environmental expert Lavdosh Feruni, who says that closing of this water body, the only one that connects the sea with the lagoon, means “the death of the lagoon”.

“The flora and fauna are destroyed, as a result the entire ecosystem. There will be dead fish, only frogs will grow in that place, while creatures that come to that place, like birds, will migrate somewhere else,” said Mr. Feruni.
