The European Commission on Thursday recommended the gradual opening of the European Union’s external borders for foreign nationals on July 1st, given their epidemiological situation.

The commission has proposed that the entry ban to the EU be lifted for those countries that can testify that their coronavirus situation is manageable.

In the European Commission’s proposal, restrictions have been sought to be lifted for all Western Balkan countries: Kosovo, Albania, Northern Macedonia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia.

The commission justified this request with the argument that “their epidemiological situation is similar or better than that in the EU.”

This recommendation is also in line with the European Commission’s expressed readiness to include Western Balkan countries in the implementation of the guidelines for the removal of restrictive measures in the fight against pandemics.

It also includes a recommendation to resume work at diplomatic and consular missions.
