Sued for changing street name

The street in Tirana that today holds the name of Kosovo’s former
president, Ibrahim Rugova, has become part of a trial at the Tirana
Court.

Veterans of the Antifascist National Liberation War and members of the War Martyrs Organization have filed a suit asking the court to repeal the administrative act of December 2011, and return the previous name, Deshmoret e 4 Shkurtit (February 4th Martyrs).

“The first name was established by the Executive Committee in 1945. This street commemorated 84 patriots who were killed in February 4th, 1944, martyrs of the fatherland”, declared Dalan Buxheli, General Secretary of the National Organization for Martyrs.

“It is an illegal decision, against all legal norms, because it directly affects the interests of the Albanian people, whose sons were killed in this war”, declared Odise Progri.

According to lawyer Idajet Beqiri, who represents this case at court, the former name honoured the martyrs and these replacements can be made only when required by high-rank state interests and a District Council decision.

“If you want to change the name of the road, you must first repeal the first decision that was taken. The Municipal Council has not done this and doesn’t have the right to change names”, Beqiri declared. This case is being treated by lawyer Agron Zhukri.
