Citizens in several cities of Albania protested peacefully today after the death of 31 year old Ilvi Meta during detention at the Kavaja police station, declared as a suicide by the authorities.

A silent and peaceful protest called by the opposition PD a few hours ago, is being held in Tirana with the motto “Stop killing in police stations”.

“At 20.00, candles will be lit near all police stations across the country in a silent peaceful protest under the motto ‘Stop killing at police stations’. In Tirana, the candles will be lit at the Prime Minister’s office at 20.00. We invite the media in Tirana and in the districts to follow this silent protest “, said the announcement of the Democratic Party.

Kavaja court today imposed the detention measure for the three police station officers arrested on charges of abuse of office after the death of Ilvi Meta inside the premises of the police station on May 4.

Although the preliminary investigations into the death of 31-year-old Ilvi Meta, inside the Kavaja police station, showed that we are dealing with a suicide, the relatives raise suspicions, saying that the deceased had been detained other times and did not suffer in police custody.
