The Socialist Party has taken the first step for no longer allowing “eternal mayors”, by replacing as candidates Qazim Sejdini in Elbasan and Vangjush Dako in Durres.
The Mayor of Maliq, Gezim Topciu, remains in place. He has been Mayor of one of the most problematic municipalities since 2000. He will run again this year.
The Socialists proposed to limit the terms of Mayors through an amendment at the Central Election Commisison, but it was rejected by the Democratic Party.
The main reason for the Democratic Party to do so is related to Xhelal Mziu, the Mayor of Kamza, who will run for a fifth term.
