Rama writes to parties about new President

30/04/2012 00:00

The Socialist Party took the first step in the process for the election
of the next President through a letter that the opposition leader sent
to the DP and SMI majority leaders, respectively Sali Berisha and Ilir
Meta, inviting them in a direct meeting to exchange their views and try
opening a constructive dialogue.

Rama emphasizes the importance of this process, which means that it should not be treated like a common parliamentary procedure, and since Albania is trying to get the EU candidate status for the third time, this election requires a special attention.

The opposition leader relates the presidential election with Albania’s EU integration, saying that: “Albanians are waiting a positive answer from the European Commission for the candidate status, together with our EU and US partners, as strong supporters of our integration road that don’t want Albania to fail for the third time this autumn. They have made everything in their power for not allowing this to happen, but the Albanian political representatives must do everything in their power and the European Commission must support us for fulfilling the EU integration process.”

Rama’s letter continues by considering the presidential election as a very important test for Albania, in a key moment that coincides with Albania’s 100th anniversary.

The only two names mentioned so far as runners are Fatos Nano, Albania’s former Prime Minister and opposition leader, and Neritan Ceka from the center right Democratic Alliance Party.

Nano has starting meeting with main party leaders and foreign diplomats.

The Democratic Alliance declared that Neritan Ceka wil run for the second time as president, after losing in 2007 against Bamir Topi from the Democratic Party, who was elected with votes from the Socialist opposition.
