Both the Albanian Prime Minister and opposition leader reacted to the declaration of the CDU/CSU Parliamentary group regarding the political crisis in Albania.

The Albanian PM, Edi Rama, said that they agree with their proposal to sit and dialogue without preconditions. Basha, on the other hand, said that he welcomes the engagement of Germany to resolve this crisis and open the European path for Albania.

The joint declaration was issued by the German MPs: Johann David Wadephl, vice leader of the CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group, also chairman of the work-group for Western-Balkan; and Christian Schmidt, CSU, rapporteur for Albania at the Foreign Commission, also former Federal Minister.

“We are following the internal crisis of Albania with great concern. For the European future of the country, there is the need of dialogue between the government and the opposition. For this, both parties need to get closer and be open to compromise.

The repeated protests in Albania are a sign of discontent by many citizens. We appeal for the protest to be peaceful. We condemn the violent acts. It is a responsibility of the lawmakers to behave reasonably in such as situation, and try to calm the situation down. If this doesn’t happen, the country is risking having its EU path closed.

We are ready to contribute in opening dialogue between the government and the opposition to overcome the crisis. But this would work only if both parties start talks without pre-conditions. Also, no topic should be left out.

The elections without the presence of the opposition are problematic in the democratic aspect, that’s why all options should be put on table, to guarantee citizens real possibilities to elect their local leaders. This includes even extraordinary measures, such as postponing the elections. The highest purpose should be returning the democratic procedures and respecting the rule of law. The international party is not interested in inter-partial political conflicts, but democratic stability.
