President Meta returns the law on the Electoral Code to the assembly, asks ‘help’ from the Venice Commission

Albanian President Ilir Meta has returned for review in the Assembly the law on the Electoral Code of Albania.

The reason according to the Presidency is to change and add other important issues as it has listed 14 key arguments for the action.

Through the 81-page document, Meta has made an in-depth analysis of the political situation that, according to him, since 2017 the government has created an aggravated political climate in the country.

Meta also sent the document to the European Commission for Democracy through the Law (the Venice Commission) for a specialized and objective opinion on the process.

Meta also calls on the SP in power to reflect after adopting a code that favors itself in the election.

The President emphasized that the Albanian Parliament does not reflect on the revision of this law after its return by the President of the Republic and that the final assessment will be on the incompatibility of the law with the Constitution and consequently with the European Convention on Human Rights. Meta states that the action is needed at a time when the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Albania, unfortunately it is still not functional.
