Police: “We identify dangerous mental patients, but we cannot intervene”

After one man with mental illness brutally murdered his nephew in
Palasa, police say they identify people who pose such dangers to the
society, but their hands are tied as long as they get released by health
institutions.

“Police is not primary. We confront the consequences of what these people cause, but health institutions need to keep them isolated”, says Agim Basha, expert at the Police Academy.

Police assists relatives of these persons whenever they call for help, Basha says, but all they can do is isolate them for 10 hours and then give them to specialized structures.

“There are often cases when relatives refuse to allow medicaments for to be injected to these individuals”, Basha says, adding they have prevented several tragedies that could have been caused by these situations.

Agim Basha says only in Vlore, where he works as Chief of Police, they have contacted around 1600 people of this category.
