Prime Minister Edi Rama started his speech at the opening ceremony of the NATO air base in Kucovo in central Albania with an article from the newspaper “Zeri i Popullit” 70 years ago, while the Soviet leader, Khrushchev, was visiting the base.

“I am here as a representative of another generation that saw the democratic changes. I am referring to a fragment of the Voice of the People in May 1954 when the leader of the Soviet Union came to Albania. The newspaper wrote that they were crying out of joy and that May the flowers had bloomed earlier to welcome Khrushchev”, said Rama.

According to him, “at that time, Albania, on this basis that reopens today, was considered a strategic location of the Soviet empire vis-a-vis the Western world. There were many Soviet planes here in Kucovo, while today we are on the other side”.

The Kuçova air base was built in 1950, but fell out of use in the 90s. After the reconstruction of the Kuçova base, Rama asked to proceed as soon as possible regarding Albania’s application for the reconstruction of the new naval base in Porto Romano.

President Bajram Begaj also said from Kuçova that the revival of the Kuçova airbase marks a new chapter in the history of the country’s defense and security.

“This base is the result of cooperation, solidarity, coordination and coordination between allies and the attention that Albania pays to security and defense. Together, we send a strong message of peace and prove that NATO is determined to protect the freedom and security of its allies,” said Begaj, among other things.
