PM Edi Rama today called the opposition’s motion for a debate on the McGonigal scandal, “the most absurd” in the history of the Albanian Parliament.

Rama again did not spare ironies with the opposition, saying that when in power they have done “of all kinds” and now they accuse the majority day and night, as soon as they fell into the opposition.

PM Rama stated: “For weeks, the opposition sewer has exploded in Albania with a desperate attempt to politically exploit a judicial process in the USA, which has nothing to do with the Albanian state, the government of Albania or me personally.

“What exactly happened?

“A former senior FBI official, namely the former head of Counterintelligence, Charles McGonigal, is accused of illegal cooperation with Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska.

“Speak, shout, scream, accuse, slander, jump up as much as you want, but you don’t have the honor of facing me in this manner.”

The Prime Minister further said that the Democratic Party has been financed by the Russians to cause destabilization and this has been documented in a CIA report.

“On the other hand, I said that if I had had any information, like those that appeared in the media, about the terrible fact that the Russians were financing the largest opposition in this country to overthrow the government, I would have passed it on to anyone I could, without question, from partner organizations sensitive to these issues, as well as to the FBI.”

At the end of his speech, the prime minister invited the opposition to the local elections on May 14, ironically saying that they will not defeat the majority as they have done in the last nine years.

After finishing his speech, Rama immediately left the assembly session, which is expected to last until late.
