The Democratic Party accused today PM Edi Rama that with the fiscal amnesty law project he is turning the country into an international financial crime haven.

The Albanian Parliament is approving the law on fiscal amnesty, which stipulates that persons who voluntarily declare their money, not only legalize it but also makes them safe from prosecution.

“The project of the outgoing prime minister ensures the inviolability and legalization of property of all members of criminal organizations inside and outside the country. These hide behind the claim that they are supposedly helping the emigrants, but in fact they will launder the money through the criminal acts of this outgoing government”, said DP’s Jorida Tabaku.

Fiscal amnesty according to Democrats will not only amnesty the criminals, but also senior officials who are corrupt.

“It is enough that a relative of a politician not listed in the latter’s family certificate and the fiscal amnesty becomes a shield for his possibly illegitimate wealth. Secondly, the outgoing prime minister’s project offers criminal protection to organized crime that will declare their money even when the assets are illegal. Beneficiaries of amnesty will not be investigated for the manner or the time when they acquired the undeclared property. The identities and the declaration are kept secret, thus protecting the offenders from those enforcing it”, says Jorida Tabaku.

Democrats are of the opinion that this project deepens the course of the clash with the US and the EU, warning that if the Prime Minister does not withdraw, the Democratic Party will repeal it upon coming to power.
