The Albanian Parliament Speaker, Ilir Meta, said that after the public
confrontation between the US Ambassador and Prosecutor General, he asked
the latter to come for explanations.
The Justice Appointment Council is made of nine members, and their candidates need to fulfill the criteria set by EURALIUS and OPDAT. Three of these members are to be selected from the Prosecution General. The Prosecution General should bring several names, to chose three of them through lottery.
The Prosecutor General brought only three candidates, avoiding this way the lottery. The US Ambassador, Donald Lu, said that this action of the Prosecutor General was against the Constitution. He also said that the PG had tried to block the judiciary reform several times, and that he was one of the many judges and prosecutors whose visa was revoked by the US Embassy.
The Prosecutor General responded by launching very harsh accusations against the US Ambassador, saying he was trying to blackmail him and force his hand with our country’s decision.
Today the PG met with the leader of the Socialist Movement for Integration, Ilir Meta, leader of the SMI, part of the ruling government coalition. After this meeting, Meta came up with a declaration which appeared to be on the Prosecutor’s side, stating that Adriatik Llalla had not violated the Constitution.
“The EURALIUS and OPDAT requirements are clear. They say that the Prosecution should bring candidates who had finished the magistrate school. These were the only three candidates from the Prosecution General who fulfilled this condition”, Meta said.
After taking the side of the Prosecutor General, Meta also tried to support the Justice Reform, but without attributing it to the US.
“My purpose is to not get involved in non-transparent agendas. I will do this calmly, relentlessly, because we are committed to finalize the Justice Reform, the only owners of which are the people of Albania”, Meta said.
