At least one ton of cannabis has been seized this Saturday bu police at
the Gjirokaster-Tepelene road. Local police say that the narcotic
substance was hidden in a truck that was transporting it. The police had
received information and was able to arrest the driver, Ardian Serezi.
Huge amount of drugs have been seized in Albania recently. 50 tons of cannabis were seized by the Albanian police in the past two years, and 30 tons from our neighboring countries. The US and EU have issued statistical reports noting serious remarks in this area.
Only in the past month, the Albanian police has seized 4 tons of drugs, while our neighbors have seized 1 ton. 11 tons were seized in 2011 in Albania, 21 tons in 2012, and 25 in 2013. For 2014, only in January police has seized 4 tons. But it is still unclear if these numbers show that the production and traffic has increased in Albania, or if the authorities are doing a better job.
Although most of the reports mention Lazarat as the main cause, the government has no plan to intervene, at least publicly. For this reason, the Albanian Interior Minister appealed his Greek and Italian counterparts to cooperate in joint operation, by creating a maritime safety triangle in our seas.
