New academic year starts with tensions as Albanian students oppose vaccination and COVID tests

The new academic year 2021-2022 has started today with tensions today in some university faculties of the country, as the conditions set require COVID vaccine certificate or negative test.

Protests against the regulations were held in Tirana.

Unvaccinated students clashed with three police officers at the entrance of the building of the Faculty of History and Philology in Tirana today with the start of the new academic year.

Those who have had the vaccination document or the negative buffer have entered quietly, but those who have not met the conditions have been left out facing opposition.

While at the entrance of the Faculty of Economics and the Polytechnic University of Tirana there were also checks and the unvaccinated students who did not have a document were left outside the building.

At the “Aleksandër Xhuvani” University in Elbasan, about 30% of the students are estimated to have been vaccinated.

Some of the faculties have made an exception, allowing all students to enter. The rector of the University of Tirana, Artan Hoxha said the day before that a total of about half of the university students have been vaccinated.
