The case of a 40-year-old man from Ksamil who raped his wife’s 12-year-old daughter has brought to the public’s attention the urgent need for a national register of pedophiles.
The initiative is already being finalized, by an initiative of activists.
“We have collected 22 thousand citizens’ signatures, they have passed for verification to the CEC and then the draft will pass to the parliament for approval.”
“In the case of the Ksamili man, after being punished for the crime he committed, the data will be transferred everywhere, so that in wherever city moves the police of the respective region will do his supervision.”
“The new law obliges the pedophile to declare the new address within 1 or 2 weeks”, said initiator activist Iris Luarasi.
In Albania there are about 98 convicted pedophiles while many others are free and unpunished.
In the US the register of persons who have committed sexual crimes, including pedophilia, is public.
In Europe the data are public, only between institutions such as police, prosecution agencies, courts, educational institutions. Such persons are not allowed to work as teachers, cleaners or live near schools.
