This Sunday, the US Ambassador to Tirana, Alexander Arvizu, had a
meeting with Fatos Nano, the former Prime Minister and Socialist leader,
who has now made public his ambition to run for President. The meeting
was held in a Tirana bar, and lasted almost 90 minutes.

After the meeting Arvizu declared that the Presidential election will be a difficult process, related with the country’s integration, but first of all, it must be a Constitutional process.

“I want to underline that this is a complete Albanian process that is related with the future of this country and its leadership, as it is also related with Albania’s role in the region, the EU perspective or the US relations. We are not talking about the election of a government Minister, but about the Albanian President. Hence, the requests are clearly set in the Constitution. It must be a Constitutional process. I fully trust that the Prime Minister and every Albanian understands this very clearly”, Arvizu declared.

Arvizu also mentioned the January 21st event, saying that he had met General Prosceutor Ina Rama and that she will raise her charges in the upcoming days. He valued Mr. Nano’s comments on Top Channel’s Top Story, with journalist Sokol Ball, and considered them as very objective. Arvizu then criticized an MP regarding his Facebook comments about January 21st events,

“I want to mention the January 21st events. I have met the Albanian General Proswecutor, and she is ready to bring the charges to Court. I will let her be more specific about the nature of these findings. As you know, this process has been very critical on our point of view, on what has happened on that horrible day. As many Albanian’s saw on Sokol Balla’s show on Top Channel, Top Story, Mr. Nano mentioned some important issues, but the most special was that regarding January 21st. His comments are probably the most objective and balanced that I have heard so far. I know that not all of them believe this. There was an Albanian MP who commented on Facebook to not agree with this. He has the right to give his points of view, but I don’t absolutely agree with him, regarding the families of the victims. In this moment, we need people who give precious opinions about the future of this country. We don’t need comments that only aim a short political goal. I think that we need a leadership for this investigation, and these were specified by Mr. Nano”, Arvizu declared.

Nano commented the meeting with Arvizu by saying that they focused on his presidential platform, which aims Albania’s integration.

“The meeting with Ambassador Arvizu is part of the consults that I have started. We share a common way of reasoning”, Nano declared.

As regards consensus within the Socialist Party and the meeting with SP leader, Edi Rama, Nano expressed his optimism that he enjoys the support of the Socialist MPs, a support that according to him has been dormant and that will be expressed soon.

As regards Berisha’s comments, that the DP will only run candidates from their own figures, Nano declared:

“The Prime Minister is a representative of the majority and he is doing his job well. He is not a politician of partial records. I cannot take the Prime Minister that partially” he declared.

Asked about what would he do, if there would be no support, Nano declared:

“Conflicts are outside my nature, tradition and political stances. I will keep progressing with offers that resolve problems”, Nano concluded.
