Parkinson is a disease that has advanced in our country, affecting even
young age groups such as 26-30. 2 in 100 persons are affected by this
disease which causes paralysis of the limbs and brain damage.

“Parkinson is a brain degenerative disease that creates problems in the way how people move, how they think. It affects their memory and mainly can be found over the sixties, but we have also had cases in the thirties and even at 26 years of age”, says Mira Rakacolli, a neurologist.

The numbers in Albania, compared to other countries, are related not only to inherited genes, but also to external factors.

“The body doesn’t produce sufficient dopamine and the first treatment of this disease is to replace this mediator. Patients could have more chances to inherit the disease if it depends on the presence of external factors that are related to stress, a non healthy diet with food that is treated with herbicides, pesticides or even by poisons in the air”, the expert declared.

According to Racolli, if the disease is cured properly it can improve the patient’s quality of life, but medicaments that treat the Parkinson disease in Albania have become reimbursable only last year, and they are very expensive.
