After authorities in Mitrovica began demolishing the wall yesterday, EU
Chief of Policy greeted the action, while the British daily newspaper
“The Independent” compared the contrast with America’s newly sworn
President, Donald Trump, whose main campaign promise was building a wall
at the border with Mexico.
The concrete wall in Mitrovica aimed to divide different ethnicities living in the same country. It was brought down this Sunday after an agreement was reached between the Kosovo government and the Serbian minority, talks mediated by the European Union and the USA.
Kosovo Prime Minister Isa Mustafa thanked all Mitrovica residents for allowing democratic methods to remove the barrier.
The action was also greeted by the EU Chief of Diplomacy, Federica Mogherini.
“The agreement reached in Mitrovica shows that both parties have the courage and vision to bring down walls and build bridges”, Mogherini said.
