The scandal of Lavitola’s meeting with the Albanian and Italian Foreign
Ministers at the Italian Foreign Ministry in Rome, during an official
visit on 21 October 2009, has taken bigger proportions.
Within two days, Minister Frattini changed his version of the facts. He initially denied of meeting him, but after a photo published on Top-Channel, he was forced to confirm it.
The Italian opposition parties now demand explanations from Frattini, who is accused of lying the Italians and of having connections with people like Lavitola.
The latter has fled Italy after an arrest order released against him. The phone records show that he has been involved in corruption affairs that are affecting the highest ranks of the Italian government.
The Italian Democratic Party and the Party of Values have requested an explanatory session at the Italian Parliament, where Frattini is asked to explain the conversations and why a person like Lavitola was present in an official meeting.
“Futuro e Liberta”, led by Gianfranco Fini, has been more direct. Italo Bocchino, the head of the Parliamentary Group for this party, asked the Italian Foreign Minister to resign.
