According to German media, Chancellor Merkel has apparently refused the request of the European Commission for a quick opening of the EU accession negotiations with Albania and Northern Macedonia.
Merkel is quoted as having stated this idea in a meeting of the German Parliamentary Commission for Europe, according to Suddeutsche Zeitung. The decision may be taken in October.
This puts Merkel against her coalition partner, the Social Democrats, who are in favour of opening the accession negotiations on June 18th.
The German Minister for Europe at the Foreign Ministry, Michael Roth, is one of the German politicians who has been strongly declared in favour of the two Balkan countries.
