The Albanian government made the decision today that medical students who start university this year must sign a contract to provide health services for 5 years in their country before deciding to go and work abroad.
While for students who are currently studying medicine, the obligation “may be less years”.
Prime Minister Edi Rama said today that the Albanian people cannot pay taxes for doctors who are trained with symbolic fees at the university, who then flee the country on the first possible occasion.
This draft law will be presented in the Parliament of Albania with an accelerated procedure, according to the Minister of Education, Evis Kushi, since in the month of August all those high school graduates who want to study the General Medicine program have the additional digitized exam that will take place in August.
Among other things PM Rama said: “I came out to give a message regarding an important decision of the government today that has to do with medical students and the obligation to serve in the country, for a certain time.
“The details will be explained by the ministers, but the essence is, I believe, very clear for every citizen of the Republic of Albania who pays taxes. The state finances the public university, in this case the training of young doctors to protect life and guarantee the health of all its citizens. It is not the same as other professions, it is a profession directly related to the obligation of every state to take care of people’s health and the right of every citizen, every family, every elderly person and child to have health care.
“In conditions where Germany or other rich countries are struggling with the aging of their population, with the ever-increasing need for fresh human resources that must come from abroad, we find it absolutely necessary to undertake this step, which is the most normal step and the easiest step possible.
“Every medical student who will enter the University of Medicine will have to be aware in advance of the fact that medicine and studies cost as much as they cost, and then to be equipped with a diploma, it will take 5 years in the service of theirown people.”
