Majko: “The truth about the referendum in Macedonia”

With this Sunday’s referendum, on September 30th, Macedonia will be on its most important crossroad, since the independence from Yugoslavia.

However, Albania’s former Prime Minister and Minister for the Diaspora, Pandeli Majko, that’s not all there is to it.

“What cannot be seen is that this referendum has turned the country into the second battle between the West and the East, after Syria and after the Cold War. This is the battle between a more expanded West, now confronted by a true East. The question of the referendum is whether the people want to join NATO and the EU by accepting the agreement with Greece”, Majko writes on Facebook.

According to Majko, Macedonia is divided between the nationalist right wing and the left’s alliance with the Albanian parties.

The Diaspora Minister says that if the referendum will not be voted by the people, Macedonia will go into chaos, and this will be just the beginning.

“Justifications that the referendum is just consultative will not be valid. Macedonia will turn into a test country, where East may declare the bitterest war against the West”, he writes.

Majko says that the failure of this referendum would be an act equal to the assassination of the Austro-Hungarian heir, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, which led to the First World War. He doesn’t exclude Albanian voters against it, fed up by the empty promises of the Ohrid agreement.

According to the former PM, the loss of this referendum will be considered as a loss of the Albanian people.
