Juncker “calms” Greeks: “Albania’s positive recommendation doesn’t mean accession”

The President of the European Commission, Jean Claude Juncker, declared that the recommendation given for opening the accession negotiations for Albania doesn’t mean that Albania joined the EU.

“We must not see again the sad experience of the tragedies that took over Balkan in the 1990s. The divisions, especially those that are related to the border, need to be resolved before there is a new accession. The commission recommends opening the accession negotiations for Albania and Macedonia, but this doesn’t mean that we have given a date for the accession negotiations”, he said.

According to Juncker, all Western Balkan countries will be judged based on the progress of their state-forming reforms.

Juncker underlined the importance of Greece for confronting the refugee crisis. He said that the EU cannot leave Athens alone for confronting such crises.

“There are EU countries that don’t consider it a problem of their own, but they forget that they have the obligation to show solidarity with Greece and offier their assistance”, he added.
