On April 9th, 1999, the Kosovo Liberation Army marked a great victory against Miloshevic’s army. This is one of the most commented battles of that time, and it is known as the Koshare Battle.
After the defeated Serbian soldiers left Kosovo’s border with Albania, a group of journalists entered the liberated zone. One of them was LSA’s journalist, Gent Shkullaku, who shares with Top Channel the first emotions of that day.
“It was a special emotion. It was the first area that was liberated and taken under the KLA control. You could feel the smell of war. Just 7-8 kilometers from Koshara there were trench fightings, with Serbian forces constantly trying to take the area under control”, he remembers.
Shkullaku has taken pictures which today document one of the most historic moments of Kosovo’s war for liberation.
Today, 19 years after this battle, Shkullaku is still convinced that the success of the Koshare battle came not only by the preparation of the KLA members, but also due to their strong desire to see their country liberated.
“I had the chance to meet the KLA fighters in Rinas, and they were young, coming from foreign countries, not used to war. But their strong desire to see their country free is what brought these results”, Gent Shkullaku says.
