Jenny and Dea say they will enjoy working during the end-of-year holiday.

They have become the newest employees of one of the cafes in the Albanian capital Tirana.

For the two girls with the ‘Down’ syndrome this is the first job in their 26 years of life and the staff has welcomed them warmly.

Jenny says: “I was overjoyed. To be honest I do the job very well, and now I feel independent. As soon as I arrive I start work immediately cleaning the tables. I’m agile…

Dea adds: I clean the tables, the books. I do not get tired at all. I like it a lot. Customers are good.

Their employment contract lasts 12 months and has started since October, as part of the Jonathan Center’s initiatives aimed at employing young people with Down Syndrome in local businesses, supported by the US Embassy.

The girls help in the cafe 2 hours every day and after finishing work, they can not wait to return among the customers the next day.

Dea has big dreams with her salary.

“I want to buy a house, a car…” she says.

Meanwhile Jenny says she’s grateful to the people who have helped her: “I will buy them a juice or something to eat,” she says.
