Inauguration ceremony cancelled

The inauguration ceremony of the fifth segment of the “Ibrahim Rugova”
highway in Kosovo was postponed due to protest about Fatmir Limaj.

Hundreds of former Kosovo Liberation Army fighters gathered in Gjurgjice village, asking the liberation of the Kosovo Democratic Party MP, Fatmir Limaj, who was kept in prison for the Klecka case.

The protesters took the podium and made it impossible for the ceremony to continue at 10:00.

The motorcade of Prime Minister Thaci returned to Prishtina, while Prime Minister Berisha returned to Albania on a helicopter.

The government of Kosovo reacted immediately after, saying that the meeting wa cancelled due to a group of irresponsible citizens who destroyed the place where the ceremony was to be held. The government also thanks the citizens who gathered to celebrate. The government apologises with the Albanian Prime Minister, Sali Berisha; the Kosovo President, Atifete Jahjaga, and the US Ambassador to Kosovo, Tracey Jacobson.

Jahjaga expresses regret

The President of Kosovo, Mrs. Atifete Jahjaga, expressed her regret for the cancellation of this inauguration due to a citizens’ protest in Gjurgjica.

The inauguration of the Nation’s Street “Ibrahim Rugova”, a major construction work of both countries, is the realization of a dream and our vision to connect with the European corridors, which will bring down all barriers for us. We express our regreat that this major work was not inaugurated today”, the President’s reaction says.
