In favor and against Fatos Nano

Fatos Nano might have received no concrete promise from the meeting with
the leader of the Socialist Movement for Integration, Ilir Meta, but
this Saturday he received the first support for his ambition to run as
President. In a phone conversation with the United for the Human Rights
Party, Vangjel Dule, he openly expressed his support to Nano.

“Nano’s initiative fills a vacuum that is present in our politics. He will fill the vacuum of institutional dialogue. Mr. Nano will start a new and positive precedent with this process for the political life of this country, while the official politics should had institutionalized it a long time ago. Mr. Nano offers us a dialogue opportunity. We will discuss in the week to come about his candidacy, and there is no reason why the UHRP party should not give its trust to Mr. Nano in 2012, when we gave it to him even in 2007. I would value it as the most dignifying candidacy and with most chances, but we must not forget that the Presidential election process will be very complicated and tense, because it will be played until the last moment and surprises are not excluded”, declared the UHRP leader, Vangjel Dule.

The Socialist Party has not given any official stance about Nano’s ambitions, but voice in favor and against him have spoken within the party, especially about the Nano’s position towards the most serious political events of 2011, January 21st and May 8th.

Andis Harasani is one of the Socialist MPs who favors Nano, and says that he will bring a new dimension to the Albanian politics by offering his capabilities now known as an understandable politics which is closer to the people and with fewer conflicts.

“For as long that the Socialist Party doesn’t have the necessary Parliament seats for electing the President, the best that we could do is supporting a candidacy that derives from the Socialist Party. He is the former Socialist leader, the man who reformed the SP. Certainly that Nano should dialogue with the SP leader, Edi Rama. I believe that it is the best not only for Mr. Nano, but also for the institution of the President, that this post goes to him”, Harasani declared.

Nano’s interview On Top Channel’s program, Top Story, with journalist Sokol Balla, and his soft stance about the January 21st events, was commented by analyst Skende Minxhozi as a similar language to a Scandinavian Social Democratic politician that has created dissatisfactions among the left parties.

The Socialist MP, Erjon Brace, writes on his Facebook:

“Four opposition protesters were killed on January 21st, and at least 10 others were wounded. This is a matter of freedom. Freedom for life comes first. You did not kill anyone on September 14th, and you were not attacked by political adversaries. You were attacked by a group of armed thugs. Why you killed no one on September 14th? Politics must not shadow the values, and ambitions must not deform convictions”, Brace declared.

Nano has gathered different stances among the majority too. The Democratic Parliamentary Group leader, Astrit Patozi, considered Nano an “already known story”, while Selami Xhepa valued him as a state figure, regardless the disagreements that the Democratic Party had against him when he was in power.
