The Russian Patriarch arrived today in Tirana, under strong security measures.
When he first announced the visit, the Russian Patriarch said that “this will be the first visit in history of the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church to Albania’s Orthodox Church, which is being revived after it was completely eliminated until the end of the 20th century”.
His press secretary, Alexander Volkov, explained that the visit is done by invitation of the Albanian Autocephalous Orthodox Church, Anastas Ianullatos.
Both churches have preserved a friendship for decades, and this, according to Volkov, is attributed to the similar experiences with religious persecution during the 20th century.
Kiril will visit the Theology Academy of the Orthodox Church in Durres, which is considered a key educative institution.
