Greece forces Albanian passengers to get off buses in Kakavija, cross the border on foot in scorching heat

The decision of the Greek government to keep the borders closed for Albanian passenger buses has caused serious problems in the movement of passengers at the Kakavija border crossing.

In temperatures reaching 42-43 degrees C (108 F), Albanian passengers are kept in queues for hours to stamp documents, and then again in the queue for customs checks and taking the buses of the Greek company of Ioannina.

Greek customs authorities initially said that Albanian buses could pass, but later withdrew this decision, thus creating long queues and difficult conditions for Albanians.

Authorities in Kakavija have come to the aid of emigrants by allowing Albanian buses to approach up to 500 meters near the customs point, but again the queues and distances that passengers have to travel remain long. Among the passengers are women and children as well as the elderly pulling their luggage on the steep road of Kakavija in hot temperatures.
