Athens has reacted strongly today after the decision of the Court of Vlora to leave in detaintion the candidate of the coalition “Bashke Fitojme”, Fredi Beleri, also part of the political structures of the Greek minority in Albania, arrested a day before for attempting to buy votes on the eve of Sunday’s local elections.

According to the Greek side, the decision is an unprecedented act that damages bilateral relations.

“Today’s decision of the Vlora court is scandalous.

The arrest of the candidate for the municipality of Himara two days before the elections does not show rule of law. The decision to imprison the candidate for mayor, reverses the rules of equality in the local elections in Himara, which is an important center of the Greek ethnic minority in Albania”, said the statement of the Greek Foreign Ministry.

The Greek officials added: “This is a decision that will have a negative impact on the relations of the European Union with Albania, as a condition for Albania’s European path is to abide by the European rules for the rule of law.”

The candidate of the Meta-Berisha opposition coalition for the municipality of Himara, Fredi Beleri, was ordered today in detaintion by the Vlora court, a day after he was arrested for ‘active corruption in the elections’, i.e. for buying votes, after the testimony of the infiltrator who said he had attempted

to pay him in return for votes.

The Greek ambassador in Tirana, Konstantina Kamitsi, was also present in the courtroom to follow the proceedings of today’s session.
