Germany’s AfD: “Balkan, not in the EU”

A few days before the important elections in Bavaria, the German right-wing party, Alternative Fur Deutschland (AFD), said that they are against the accession of Western Balkan countries in the EU.

In a press release held in Berlin, the spokesperson for this party, Harald Weyel, and the Western Balkan rapporteur, Siegbert Droese, said that the main reason for not wanting Western Balkan countries in the EU is the presence of corruption at highest leadership levels and the government ties with organized crime.

“This has turned into their governing model”, Drose said, quoted by Deutsche Welle. “We don’t agree with the automatic entrance of these countries in 2025, as it has been said for Montenegro and Serbia. We need more time and these countries must offer something before they enter in concrete negotiations with us”, he said.

Another concern is the large number of Eastern and Southern European countries in the EU.

For this reason, AFD proposed that these countries should create their own Union, based on the Benelux model.

According to the two politicians, the Western Balkans don’t belong to the EU geographically and culturally. They mentioned the influence of Turkey in Albania, focusing on the mosque that has been funded by Erdogan’s government.

According to AFD, the entire population of the EU should decide through a referendum before accepting these countries.
