Today in the Special Court of Appeals was given the verdict for the former Minister of Interior Saimir Tahiri, who was sentenced to 3 years and 4 months in prison.

At the last hearing held on January 31, the Special Prosecution Against Corruption and Organized Crime requested 12 years in prison for Tahiri on the charges of ‘Narcotics trafficking in cooperation, in the form of a structured criminal group’, ‘Participation in a structured criminal group’ and‘ Committing an offense in a structured criminal group ’.

With an abbreviated sentence, the former minister benefits from a one-third reduction in sentence, and if the court approves the SPAK request, he will have to serve only 8 years out of the 12 required.

Similar accusations are leveled against the former director of the Vlora Police, Jaeld Çela.

Tahiri was present in the courtroom last session, along with lawyer Maks Haxhia who denied any involvement in criminal activities and pleaded not guilty.

Tahiri was convicted of Serious Crimes Court for the charge “abuse of duty” with 3 years of probation, while the Special Appeal returned him for retrial in the First Instance.

The former minister appealed and the High Court’s deliberation chamber, which accepted to retry him with a new governing body, prompting the former minister’s case to be re-examined on appeal.

The former Minister of Interior was put under investigation in November 2017, after the Italian authorities cracked down on the criminal organization of the Habilaj brothers.
