From Gjirokastra in the south of Albania, it is reported today that the prices of basic food products have undergone a significant increase in the month of December. Festive table products such as meat and dairy by-products have an increase of almost 30% compared to last year.

Products such as the lamb or cow meat have almost doubled in price over the last 2 years, reaching the levels of 1,600 or 1,700 ALL per kg.

For families with low incomes and for the elderly, this period of the year on the eve of the holidays becomes very difficult to cope with.

Vegetables and fruits of local origin have also higher prices than imported products, which is due to the small amount of produce that comes from the farms around Gjirokastra.

Dried fruits such as walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts have an average increase of almost 100 ALL per kg.

In Gjirokastra, the return of foreign workers for the holiday season, along with the current price crisis, promote an abusive increase in food prices.

The National Food Authority says that it has made checks mainly focused on the quality of food, uncertified products or expiration dates, but the abusive increase in prices continues during the end of the year until typically the first week of January.
