Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The prices of basic food products are skyrocketing, and salesmen say
that this tendency keeps going on since the beginning of this year.
Food inflation in March broke a new record this year, with 5.8%.
The growth was bigger with vegetables, which increased with 24.6%, compared to one year ago, and fruits that have increased with 10%, compared to the same month of one year earlier.
Salesmen say that the price increase comes from import, but the first domestic goods that are entering the market also have a higher cost.
This is a strong hit to the low income families that spend 80% of their monthly budget only for food.
The generally low inflation of 2.4% might be a result of the fact that the prices of some hygiene goods and transport fees have decreased, but they are still considered a luxury for the poor people.
Bank of Albania experts think that this situation will be temporary, but the increase of 5.8% of food for families that live with a minimal wage almost will not feel the positive effects of the government’s decision to remove the income tax.
