A day after the European Commission backed the opening of accession negotiations between the EU and Albania, President Ilir Meta has sent a strong letter of concern to the European Commissioner for Enlargement and Enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi, heralding a deepening of the political crisis in the country.
The president’s letter seen by Top Channel, begins with the belief that the commission’s recommendation will be supported by member states, even though he disagrees with the findings of the European Commission.
“I cannot hide my regret about photographing the facts regarding the establishing the Albanian Constitutional Court. There is without doubt a dispute over the procedure for appointing constitutional judges, but this comes from a distorted interpretation by the ruling majority with the aim of capturing the country’s constitutional court and adding this Sui Generis crisis to Albania”, the letter states.
